While it may have started as a place for friends to connect and share personal aspects of their lives, it is now a burgeoning platform for brands and businesses around the world.
How does Instagram work?
The fundamentals of Instagram are basic. Upload a photo, write a caption with a few hashtags, and press post. Your photo will then show up in the feed of other Instagram users that have chosen to follow your account. Users can then like or comment on your post.

In 2016, Instagram released new business tools for brands on Instagram. Business owners using Instagram professionally rather than personally, were encouraged to make the switch to a business account. Right now, Instagram boasts over 25 million business profiles worldwide.
One of the most valuable features of an Instagram business account includes real-time metrics that offer priceless insights about your followers and how they interact with your posts and stories.
Key insights include:
- Profile visits and website clicks
- Reach and impressions of your account
- Demographics of your followers including age, location and time of day they are most active
- Success of each post measured by engagement, impressions, likes, reach, saves and more
- Success of Instagram Stories measured by impressions, reach, taps forward, taps back, exits, replies and swipes away
One of the most popular features of an Instagram business account is the ability to add a link to your Instagram Stories, allowing users to click straight to your website. Currently, this feature is only available for Business Accounts.
If you convert to a Business profile on Instagram, you’ll also have the opportunity to create Promoted Posts. Similar to boosting a Facebook post, you can pay to have your Instagram content surfaced in front of a desired audience. You will then have access to measure the success of your promotion by clicking on the post and tapping View Insights.
How do you switch to an Instagram business account?
To switch from a personal Instagram account to a business account, go to Settings and clicking Switch to Business Profile. That’s it!
